Eccentric superhero full of beans for Welsh walk

Caudwell

An eccentric fundraiser from South Wales is preparing for one of his most ambitious challenges to date, in a bid to help a local disabled boy.

Charity Superhero, Captain Beany, has already made it into the record books for his baked bean fundraising achievements and now he plans to be the first person to walk around Wales holding a plate of beans on toast!

Key Facts

  • The fundraiser from South Wales is walking the perimeter of Wales
  • Captain Beany is an eccentric Welsh fundraising superhero
  • The total challenge is 460 miles
  • Captain Beany hopes to complete the challenge in 17 days
  • He is raising money for the Cieran Jones Appeal to pay for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy treatment in the USA

The 460 mile trek, starting from Aberavon Beach on Friday (13th August) will take anestimated 17 days and call at towns spread along the Welsh coast and border.

Captain Beany is tackling the mammoth trek to raise funds for Cieran Jones, a four-year-old from Port Talbot who is raising money for specialist treatment in the USA.

Cieran, who has Cerebral Palsy and lives in Port Talbot with twin brother, Connor and Mum and Dad, Emma and Neil Jones is raising money to pay for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy treatment at the St Louis Children's Hospital.

Cieran suffers from Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy; a type of brain damage which affects his mobility and means he has to use a wheelchair or walking frame.

The ground-breaking Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy treatment is currently only available in the United States and releases muscle tension in Cerebral Palsy sufferers, allowing some patients to walk independently for the first time.

Quotes

If I see a child who needs my help I am compelled to try and help, like any good superhero. I have supported their local events but wanted to push the bean to the limit and try and fundraise in every corner of this great country!

Captain Beany

Being a superhero can be a lonely job, so I try and blend with the public as much as I can, but it can hard when you are completely orange and wearing a cape! I would love it if people joined me as I wander around Wales or sponsor me to give me the inspiration to keep going.

Captain Beany

It is really heart wrenching to consider the prospect of operation after operation and endless stays in hospital for my beautiful little boy, and that is what is in store if we don't get him the treatment in the USA. Like any Mum, I want to give my sons the best life possible. It is my dream to see my two lads playing football together and I'm incredibly grateful for everything people are doing to help us.

Emma Jones, Cieran's mum
